Advancing Excellence in Clinton Public Schools

Come To Study Island!

Clinton Middle School eighth grade science teacher Jeanie Driskill first received a $750 grant from CPSF in Fall 2009 to implement Study Island in her classroom.  Study Island is a web-based program built directly from the Oklahoma Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS), specifically designed to help students master the content specified in the PASS requirements.

PASS skills include five Process Standards:  Observe & Measure, Classify, Experiment, Interpret & Communicate, and Inquiry; and five Content Standards:  Properties & Chemical Changes in Matter, Motion & Forces, Diversity & Adaptations of Organisms, Structures & Forces of the Earth, and Earth’s History.

The Study Island program has many diverse facets, allowing for both class participation and individual work.  “The Study Island program was very successful...in identifying students who needed additional practice on skills that were difficult for them to understand,” said Driskill.  Students work through each standard by taking a pre-test and quizzes on each standard.  If a standard was not mastered, the program recorded it and the student worked through it again. “Study Island meets the individual needs of all students by allowing me to implement plans for specific needs, while providing enrichment for the students who had mastered the skills,” reported Driskill.  “It also really helped them approach the CRT tests with confidence!”

CPSF awarded Driskill an additional $900 in the Spring of 2011 to continue the Study Island program with her classes.
