Published June 2008 Clinton High School is not the only Clinton Public Schools site that can boast of exceptional scholars. Clinton Middle School student William Davis, who will be an eighth grader in the fall, has racked up quite an impressive collection of medals and trophies with his academic pursuits.
Davis, son of David and Carol Davis, has been the State Champion in Math at the State Academic Meet for the last two years. Additionally, he placed in the top three in every subject he tested in at Regional Academic Meets: Social Studies, Math, Current Events, Humanities, Science, and Language Arts.

As a seventh grader, Davis scored high enough on his ACT to qualify for state recognition in all subjects through the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP). Additionally, his Science score was high enough to garner him national recognition through the program.
Davis has also been the captain of the MathCounts team, comprised of sixth through eighth graders, for the past two years. Both years, the team went all the way to state competition.
“Math is my favorite subject. I was doing math problems when I was 3 years old, even before I could write,” Davis said. “My parents would make up worksheets for me with problems on one side, answers on the other side and I would draw lines to connect them. I feel a real sense of accomplishment when I master a higher level math concept.”
Davis isn’t just about the books, though. He also plays baseball and basketball, and has made numerous honor bands playing trombone. He has three brothers: Tucker, who will be a junior at CHS in the fall; Sam, going into the seventh grade; and Nathan, who will be a fourth grader. Sam was also a teammate on the Academic Team, placing third in sixth grade Math at the State Academic Meet.
Davis credits much of his success to his family’s support, particularly that of older brother Tucker. “He’s pushed me to achieve,” he said, “in all areas – academics, sports, and music.”
