Advancing Excellence in Clinton Public Schools

Sara Shepherd

Published June 2008
Clinton High School 2008 graduate Sara Shepherd has been named an Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence 2008 Academic All-State Awards honoree.
As such, she was among the top 100 public high school seniors, selected from 512 nominations statewide.

Shepherd, daughter of Dr. Jon and Janelle Shepherd, ranked first in her class.  She had a 4.0 grade point average and scored a 33 on her ACT.  She was a member of the State and National Honor Societies throughout high school.

She was also named Student of the Month all four years of high school, and Red Tornado Girl her senior year.  Throughout high school she was a member of Gold Renaissance and served as her class’s secretary.

Her activities included Student Council, Literary Club, Advanced Chorus, Socrates Advance Placement Society, Academic Team, volleyball, Church of Christ youth group, and 4-H.

Janelle Shepherd, Shepherd’s mother, was also her principal during her senior year of high school.  “It takes more than excelling academically to make Academic All-State,” she pointed out.  “Sara has worked very hard, and we are extremely proud of her.”

Shepherd plans to attend Oklahoma State University, and double major in agriculture economics and accounting.  She hopes to become a CPA and work with big business in the future.

The Academic All-State Awards program was begun in 1987, and Clinton has had nine other scholars receive the honor:  Paige Stratton (1987), Bernie Lin and Ann Schwartz (1988), Eddie Chen (1992), Andrea Bieberich (1993), Natalie Duncan (1995), Landon Lorenz (1996), Rachel Wright (2003), and Jordan Graft (2006).

This year’s honorees received a $2,000 scholarship and a medallion.  Shepherd’s scholarship was provided in part by the Clinton Public School Foundation, which contributed $1,500 as an Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence Academic All-State Partner.

David L. Boren, chairman and founder of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence, describes the selection of the All-State scholars as “Oklahoma’s most rigorous academic competition.”  To be nominated, students must meet at least one of the following criteria:  an ACT composite score of at least 30; an SAT combined critical reading and math score of at least 1350; or selected as a semi-finalist for a National Merit, National Achievement, or National Hispanic Scholarship.
